Item Details
Description
Elvis Presley's Personally Owned Custom Black Grommet Jacket Designed by Bill Belew Seen in "Elvis Presley: The Searcher" W/(2) LOAs and Photos - This black jacket was personally owned by Elvis Presley and was custom made from a sketch by iconic costume designer Bill Belew, which he designed especially for Elvis. The jacket is black knit with satin houndstooth lining with IC Costume Co. label, and leather pockets and cuffs with brass grommets. Elvis can be seen wearing this jacket in the two-part documentary, "Elvis Presley: The Searcher," while rehearsing "Burning Love" and he accidentally hits himself on the mouth with his microphone. This took place during Elvis' recording session at Studio B in Nashville on May 21st, 1971, one year and three months before the song was released, and is arguably the first video recorded of Elvis singing what would become the massive hit. You can clearly see the cuffs when Elvis is holding the microphone and the pocket later after he drinks and puts down his bottle of mineral water. The jacket comes with a letter of authenticity from Charlie Hodge, which states that it was one of Elvis' favorite outfits. According to Hodge's letter, "He had pants that matched it and often wore it on stage as well." Hodge goes on to tell how Elvis had the jacket sent to a tailor in Vegas to repair the cuffs after they got caught on something and became loose, and was angry when the jacket was returned and there were stitches where they shouldn't have been, stating, "I can't wear this damn thing, if it was a TV I'd shoot the son of a bitch out." Elvis first tried to give the jacket to Charlie Hodge, but eventually gave it to his karate instructor Ed Parker. The lot also comes with a letter from former IC Costume Co. Director Ciro Romano, and three photographs of Elvis wearing the jacket.
