North Pacific, Hawaiian Islands, Maui, Wailuku, Pre-Contact Period, ca. 16th to 18th century CE. A hand-carved lava rock pounder of substantial conical form with a shallow vertical groove carved in to one side. Pounders of this size were used to pulverize the flesh of the breadfruit (or 'ulu) to create an easy-to-eat version with a smooth texture; however when baked, the texture resembles bread. Size: 6.375" L x 6.875" W x 10" H (16.2 cm x 17.5 cm x 25.4 cm)

Expected chips and pitting, with light earthen deposits and calcifications, otherwise intact and excellent. Great heft and nice preservation to form. Previous inventory label beneath pounding face.
