Description
Framed Oval Portrait of General Washington 1828. After Gilbert Stuart Portrait Of General Washington, 1828, Engraving. This portrait of General Washington was engraved for the Encyclopoedia Londinensis in 1828 and shows a bust-length engraving of George Washington set inside an oval frame. He is looking to his left and wears a military jacket with a big collar and embroidered details, a black cravat, and a partial eagle-shaped medal pinned to his chest. The backside of the portrait says it was framed by Foster Bros. at 3 Park Square in Boston, and apparently the Foster Brothers were noted frame makers in Boston. Established by Stephen Bartlett Foster (1856-1932) and John Roy Foster (1863-1931), Foster Brothers opened at 164 Boylston Street, Boston, in 1893. By 1896, Foster Brothers had moved to 3 Park Square, just around the corner from its first location. Eventually, the business relocated to 4 Park Square, where it stayed for the remainder of its existence. The frame is black with gold trim and measures 9 3/8 x 7 1/8 in. wide and the portrait measures 6 3/8 x 4 3/8 in. wide, and the frame is already wired for hanging. #9 #1717
