Description
Offered in this lot is a Pre-Columbian Native American stone mortar and pestle. Mortars and pestles were invented in the Stone Age, when humans found that processing food and various other materials by grinding and crushing into smaller particles allowed for improved use and various advantages. Scientists have found ancient mortars and pestles in Southwest Asia that date back to approximately 35000 BC. In the history of the Americas, the pre-Columbian era spans from the original settlement of North and South America in the Upper Paleolithic period through European colonization, which began with Christopher Columbus's voyage of 1492. This mortar measures approximately 4.75"W diameter x 3.25"H, pestle is 4.5"L.*
