Description
**First Time At Auction**
Native American, Alaska, Inuit / Inupiak / Inupiaq, ca. mid 20th century CE. Hand carved by Bekoa Look and signed on the back paw, this soapstone sculpture represents a bear, most likely a polar bear! It stands on its four paws with its head stretched forward inquisitively, the ears slightly protruding from the sides. Incised lines detail the piece, with small circles for eyes, a simple nose, mouth, and claws. The soapstone presents with lovely light and dark green hues as well as black and white striations running through it. Although stylized, it captures the lumbering and rounded body of the bear, the mighty hunter of the north. Inuit revered these powerful animals that thrived in the Arctic, and polar bears were hunted by the Inuit and treated with respect and dignity with offerings made to the bear's spirit as the hide was given special treatment before being sewn into clothing. Size: 5.25" L x 1.75" W x 2" H (13.3 cm x 4.4 cm x 5.1 cm)
Provenance: ex- Komer Gallery, New York City, New York, USA, circa 1965
