Ancient Egyptian, New Kingdom, 18th Dynasty, Faience Amulet w/ Smenkhkare Cartouche ca. 1335 to 1334 BCE. Size: 0.5 inch Length x 0.35 inch Wide (1.3 cm x 0.9 cm) reign of Smenkhkare, A mold-formed faience amulet of a petite size containing four enclosed hieroglyphs representing the cartouche of Smenkhkare (also Smenkhkara or Smenkh-ka-ra, "He who Beautifies the Spirit of God"). The four hieroglyphs including (from top to bottom) a sun disk, a scarab, an ankh, and three vertical lines, and the entire amulet is enveloped in lustrous blue glaze. This is a fragment of a larger faience cartouche. Losses to bottom section as shown. Light encrustations on verso and within some hieroglyphs, and light fading to original glaze pigment. Nice earthen deposits throughout. Cartouche hieroglyphs are still visible and legible. Provenance: Private California Collection acquired from Artemis Gallery 4/10/2020 ex-Phillip Mitry collection, noted antiquities dealer in Cairo, Egypt before emigrating to the United States in 1951 (Certificate of Authenticity from Artemis)
