Description
Carte-de-visite (CDV) photograph of a standing Confederate officer identified on the mount in period script “Lieut. Southall.” Reverse bears the imprint of a St. Louis photographer.
Lieutenant Southall stands in his double-breasted regulation Confederate officer’s frock equipped with a sash and two-piece “CS” belt buckle.
Though Southall’s identity has yet to be confirmed, there are only a handful of officers by that name, fewer still whose service was in the Western Theatre of the war. One likely candidate is “R McG Southall,” who served in the 10th Tennessee Infantry and was taken as a prisoner-of-war at the Battle of Fort Donelson.
Excellent portrait.
