Description
Mid-19th Century Trump with New Hampshire IDs
Leather, brass, and wood trunk. Boston, MA: Easter & Winship. 15 x 13.5 x 9 in. Manufacturer’s printed label on green paper affixed to interior lid. Interior fabric lining and woven straps intact. Remnants of a seal to trunk lid, possibly from Concord, NH. Exterior stenciled “W.W. Allen / Penacook, N.H.” and “A. Warren / Concord. N.H.” Stenciled names appear to have been slightly re-touched to correct fading.?
W.W. Allen operated a store in Penacook, New Hampshire, a suburb near Concord, in the late 19th century. We have encountered porcelain made for the “W.W. Allen Store” in Penacook. It is possible he is one of the many W. Allen’s who enlisted in New Hampshire regiments during the Civil War.
Per the consignor, A. Warren is Alvah Warren of Northumberland, New Hampshire, who enlisted as a private on 15 August 1862, mustered into Co. H of the 13th New Hampshire Infantry, and was killed in action (KIA) at Fredericksburg on 13 December 1862.
The manufacturers Easter & Winship were established in Boston from 1858 to the early 1870s. W.W. Winship would later operate their own business.
