Description
Small tin mirror carried during the Civil War by a Union soldier from Massachusetts. Attached to the mirror is an old tag with a typewritten note:
Mirror carried in Civil War by Wm. Fredk. Newell. Presented by his grandson, Fredk. Wm. Newell, Co. A, 6th Mass. Inf. Regiment, Spanish War
William Frederick Newell, a farmer from Dalton, Massachusetts, was just 18 when he enlisted in the 34th Massachusetts Infantry. He served for nearly three years, sustaining a wound at the battle of Piedmont, Virginia in June of 1864. Newell likely carried this small mirror throughout his service. Constructed of tin, it appears consistent with similar personal objects that were obtained by sutlers or sent as gifts from families to soldiers off to War. The tag indicates that Newell’s grandson, himself a veteran of a later conflict, may have donated the mirror to some kind of veteran’s hall or museum in the early 20th century. It is conceivable that he carried it during his service, too.
A very nice personal item with a period tag that attests to its provenance.
