Description
4pp. 11 x 7 in. when folded. A rare piece of ephemera relating to the "First Centenary Anniversary Celebration of the Occupation of Valley Forge by the Continental Army 1778- 1878." The liberal use of alternating type styles is palpable. The printed program is headed by a woodblock of Washington's Headquarters flanked by soldiers. The succeeding pages spell out the formal order of ceremony, starting with the invocation through a number of songs and devotionals, a 38 gun salute, followed by hymns, and ending with the obligatory benediction - together striking a tone of solemnity. This particular occasion was not a Federal or state sponsored event, rather it was entirely a local endeavor organized by the "Officers of the Valley Forge Centennial Association" who are individually listed at the end of the program. ?
