Item Details
Description
Partly printed document signed by Horatio Marbury, as Secretary of State of Georgia, and E. Clark, completed in manuscript. Oak Hall, [Columbia County], GA, January 1785. 1 page. Undersigned by Horatio Marbury.

A document certifying that Reubin Lett “was enlisted to serve as a soldier in the Battalion of Minute-Men, raised for the Defense of the State,” but that he was not an inhabitant of Georgia at the time of his enlistment or 6-months prior.

Horatio Marbury (1740-1820), was a son of Captain Leonard Marbury (1708-1794).
He was involved in Georgia state politics, serving as the state’s second secretary of state from 1799-1811. In the role, he published Georgia’s first official digest of laws with William H. Crawford (1772-1834).

An unusual document regarding the enlistment of a Revolutionary War veteran. Georgia documents from this period are scarce.

[Revolutionary War, George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, War of 1812, Manuscripts, Ephemera, Georgia].
