Description
Revolutionary War Era 4 Manuscripts/Documents Including an ALS by Gouverneur Morris, Zebulon Butler, Richard Varick and a Robert Morris Note. Collection of four Revolutionary War era notables.
1.) ALS by Gouverneur Morris, Signer of the Constitution and author of its preamble, 1p quatro, New York, June 26, 1774, probably to his solicitor regarding that "Mrs. Morris is of the same opinion regarding monies in Bauhers's Hand and will such time he can raise funds rather than distress him with the sale of his land. Clipped close to sides with no loss of text. Neatly penned and in very fine condition. 8 x 7½".
2.) Zebulon Butler, soldier and politician from Connecticut who served with the Continental Army as Lt. Colonel of the 3rd Regiment and commanded teh garrison of Forty Fort. A debenture for salaries due members of the Connecticut legislature. Dated 1760, double sided 9 ½ x 8".
3.) Richard Varick, One of George Washington's trusted military confidents, recording secretary of his staff and close friend and admirer of Benedict Arnold until exposed which caused him great mental distress. Varrick went on to even greater success in New York as attorney-general and ultimately the Mayor of New York. Here he has signed a permit to an individual to own a tavern with a huge list of restrictions.
4.) Robert Morris Promissary Note Signed in Philadelphia on April 8 1795 boldly causing ink burn through the 'r' and 's'. Morris was one of only two men to sign the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation and the Constitution. But shady land deals spiraled him into debt and in fact he was arrested and put into a Philly prison three years after signing this note.
