Description
AMERICAN REVOLUTIONARY WAR ERA WOODEN CANTEEN, large cheesebox form of stave construction with two finger-lapped wooden securing bands, inset and raised rectangular-framed wooden bunghole with threaded interior, adjacent stave with vent hole, two small hanging holes to outer rims flanking bunghole. Large carved "4" to one side which appears to be period and is likely a military regimental designation. Retains an excellent old surface with warm color. Fourth quarter 18th century. 11" D, 6 1/2" W.
