Revolutionary War Era American Hand-Forged Spontoon
c. 1760-1780 Revolutionary War Era, American Spontoon, Hand-Forged Head with short Wooden Staff, Choice Very Fine.
This original late French and Indian to Revolutionary War Era, Spontoon head is made from Hand-forged iron. The head itself measures about 13” long and 1.75” wide having tapered sides, and including the wooden staff it measures 48” total. It has the expected slight pitting and a natural russet-brown even patina. Appears similar to an example listed as “14” on page 248 in “Collector’s Illustrated Encyclopedia of the American Revolution” by Neumann and Kravic. Although some officers carried light muskets in the field, General George Washington stressed the use of spontoons throughout the War as a symbol of rank and to permit more attention toward the men during combat. Trivial bend where the head and metal decorative 5.5” collar meet securing and supporting the wood end attached to the head. An impressive weapon that remains in nice condition, that would fit well into any Revolutionary War collection or display.
