Description
A "First Day of Issue / 1821-1971 / 150th Anniversary / Missouri / Statehood" First Day Cover, signed by former 33rd U.S. President Harry S. Truman (1884-1972) as "Harry S Truman" and signed by former First Lady Bess Truman (1885-1982) as "Bess W. Truman" near the bottom edge. Encapsulated and PSA/DNA graded NM-MT+ 8.5. Postmarked in Independence, Missouri on May 8, 1971. N.d., n.p. With a monochrome cachet at left depicting the iconic "Gateway to the West" arch in St. Louis as well as a Mississippi River steamboat. Bearing a canceled stamp officially issued that day: a multicolored U.S. 8-cent stamp based on a Thomas Hart Benton mural depicting pioneers. A former collector's pencil inscriptions can be found verso, else near fine. The actual size of the envelope is 6.5" x 3.625" while the overall size of the slab is 9.5" x 4.625."
Harry S. Truman died 19 months after signing this First Day Cover celebrating Missouri statehood (on August 10, 1821), in December 1972.
