Description
Two items related to American writer Kurt Vonnegut (1922-2007), including a signed photograph and signed "Rolling Stone" bookplate.
The lot includes:
1) A glossy black and white publicity photograph of Vonnegut smoking a cigarette, signed by him and inscribed by him as "LABOR DAY / 1997" at lower right. 8" x 10.25." Near fine.
2) An adhesive bookplate, partly printed "Rolling Stone / 1290 Avenue of the Americas, New York, NY 10104" at the top, signed by Vonnegut with a dramatic signature more graphic than textual, which includes an asterisk, at center. Unused and near fine. 4.25" x 3.75."
Over the course of his 50-year-long writing career, Kurt Vonnegut explored the limits of autobiography, fantasy, and mixed literary genres. His short stories, novels, plays, and works of non-fiction were unexpectedly original, strange, and often darkly humorous. Vonnegut's novel "Slaughterhouse-Five," which is a science fictional twist on the author's real life experiences as a prisoner of war in World War II Dresden, was nominated for the Hugo Award, but has also been banned by some school systems. As Vonnegut's celebrity and cult mystique grew, he initially resisted the idea of writing for popular culture magazines like "Rolling Stone," insisting that the journal "didn't have the balls" to publish his work. He later reconsidered and became a regular contributor.
