Gustave Dore ALS Thanking Prince Leopold for his Gift

Gustave Doré (1832-1883). Autograph Letter Signed, "GuDoré", in French, 1p, 5.125" x 8.125", Paris, August 27, 1872. To Robert Hawthorn Collins (1841-1908) at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, asking him to extend thanks to Prince Leopold for "le charmant present". Includes original stamped, postmarked transmittal envelope. Expected mailing folds. Small tear at lower right, not affecting text. Light soiling and faint scattered foxing. In near fine condition.

Sold at Swann Auction Galleries in 1997 for $500.

Doré was a French artist best known for his prolific output of wood engravings, especially those illustrating classic books, which achieved great international success. Although he was widely known for this technique, he was also a famed illustrator, painter, comics artist, caricaturist, and sculptor.
