Description
J. Q. Adams Free Frank to Pro-American Brit
John Quincy Adams (1767-1848). Free Frank Signed, "J. Q. Adams", along upper right corner, 1p, 5" x 2.75". Addressed in Adams's hand: "George Joy Esqr / 12. Paper Buildings - Middle Temple / London". Flattened folds. Minor discoloration. In fine condition.
George Joy was a young man when the Revolution broke out in Boston. While he did not share his father’s Loyalism, he and the entire family fled the upheaval, first visiting British-occupied New York, where George apparently was able to act on his own political sentiments by aiding American prisoners, then moving to Halifax, and finally to London. Joy would remain in London for the rest of his life. He kept regular correspondence with both British and American leaders and acted as a self-appointed ambassador for the United States. Besides writing newspaper essays and pamphlets, Joy sent turgid letters of friendly advice to American leaders, including John Quincy Adams. Numerous letters are known to exist between these two men during this period, mostly discussing the deteriorating state of British-American relations.
