Item Details
Description
[AFRICAN AMERICANA - EDUCATION]. Printed cabinet card portrait of African American educator, scholar, and author Daniel Barclay Williams (1861-1895). Chicago, IL: A Leese & Co., ca 1890s.

4 1/4 x 6 1/2 in. printed, shoulder-length portrait with Daniel Barclay Williams' facsimile signature below (toning, edge and corner wear, including some chipping and minor corner loss).

A native of Richmond, VA, Daniel Barclay Williams was a graduate of Brown University. He was the first Black professor of classical languages at the Virginia Normal and Collegiate Institute, having been hired in 1885. Williams authored nine books during his tenure at Virginia Normal and Collegiate Institute. He died suddenly at the age of 34, and it is possible that this card was published as a memorial to the prominent African American author and educator.
