African American Senator Blanche Bruce NM-MT 8 Document Signed
Partial-printed document signed, 3.5" x 8.5" (folded), August 28, 1890, Washington, DC. Deed of Trust signed in the lower right corner "B. K. Bruce" during his time as Recorder of Deeds for the District of Columbia. Darkened paper toning throughout, with expected creases and folds. Else very good condition. Encapsulated by PSA/DNA to the overall size of 5.5" 12.5" and graded NM-MT 8.
Born into slavery in Prince Edward County, Virginia, Blanche Kelso Bruce (1841-1898) was a notable Republican politician who would become the first African American senator to serve a full term in the state of Mississippi from 1875 to 1881. In his later career, Bruce was appointed Register of the Treasury under presidents Chester A. Arthur and William McKinley.
