CIVIL WAR UNION ISSUED GENERAL ORDERS (8)
Item Details
Description
A fine lot of eight Union General Orders, most of which were issued by Assistant Adjutant General Edward D. Townsend. Three of the orders detail the arraignment and sentencing of citizens and soldiers, some highly ranked. No. 143 details the case of Private Ludwig Dessyn, charged with disobedience. Dressyn refused to follow orders from his commander and used disloyal language such as ‘Hurrah for Jefferson Davis I will not fight for the Union Army anymore’, and even incited a mutiny while asking for help upon his arrest. He was initially sentenced ‘To be shot to death with musketry...’, but a recommendation from his commanding general changed his sentence to six month’s imprisonment at Alton, Illinois. No. 146 explains that Captain Henry B. Todd had been charged with ‘Conduct unbecoming an officer and a gentleman’ by appropriating the diamond ring and silver of a lady under the pretense of helping her, resulting in his dismissal from the army. No. 147 discusses the case of William L. Shurburne and Samuel Baxter, who were tried and found guilty of trading with the enemy, therefore receiving a five and one year imprisonment at Albany Penitentiary respectively. Remaining orders include: No. 116 naming ‘non-commissioned officers and privates, having been duly examined and declared unfit for further field service, but fit for duty in the Veteran Reserve Corps', No. 14 lays out the changes of ‘Mustering Officers, Commissaries, and Assistant Commissaries of Musters’, No. 138 publishes an Act of Congress garnering financial support for the Military Academy, No. 3 gives orders and instructions ‘for the information of Officers in the Quartermaster’s Department’, and No. 29 states the proper forms to be used ‘for Requisitions and Bills of Landing’, attached to a ‘Bill of Landing’ form. Conditions vary slightly, overall very good.
