Description
(1819 - 1892) Attorney General of the C.S.A, and governor of Alabama during the Civil War. Fine content A.L.S. on his law firm's letterhead, 2pp. 4to., Montgomery, July 10 [1890], to a U.S. Army chaplain. Watts advises his correspondent about how he may contact an number of named ex-Confederate cabinet officers and generals, including Robert M. T. Hunter, Wade Hampton, George Davis, Simon Bolivar Buckner, etc. He continues: '...I have not looked over my old papers in 20 years, & I do not remember that I have the letters...of the members of Mr. Davis' cabinet. The time has come in the history of the U.S. when the bitterness...between the North & the South by the war should be buried. 'Let the bloody shirt be folded up, and laid away in some secluded spot, with no headstone to mark the place of its eternal rest'...' Significant paper loss due to insect damage, but not affecting any of the text and still overall good to very good.
