Description
(1819 - 1892) Attorney General of the C.S.A, and governor of Alabama during the Civil War. Fine content A.L.S. on his law firm's letterhead, 2pp. 4to., Montgomery, Mar. 15, 1890 to a collector. Watts advises his correspondent about how he may contact a number of ex-Confederate cabinet officers and generals or family members, including Stephen R. Mallory, Leroy P. Walker, Christopher Memminger, Wade Hampton, Judah Benjamin, etc. He continues: '...I was appointed Atty. Genl. of the Confederate States in the early part of 1862, under what was termed the Confederate Constitution; but being off in the army I did not receive notice of my appointment until the 26th of March 1863. I qualified as such officer in Richmond Va. on 9th of April 1862...' Very significant paper loss due to insect damage affecting the text but well clear of the signature.
