THOMAS BRAGG (1810 - 1872) North Carolina lawyer and politician, brother of Gen. Braxton Bragg. Served in the Confederate States Cabinet as Attorney General from 1861-62. Unusual A.LS., 1p. 4to., Richmond, Mar. 24, 1862 to C.S.A. General and Secretary of War GEORGE W. RANDOLPH (1818-1867) on his first full day as Secretary of War, asking that a Mr. Thomas, a member of the North Carolina legislature, be allowed a passport to return home: '...owing that special business demands his immediate return...he is denied a passport at the passport office because of the number of troops...' On the verso, Randolph pens an A.E.S.: 'Mar 24/62 Genl. Winder will have a passport issued to the gentleman named within. G.W. Thompson Sec. of War'. Mounting strip along one margin, else fine.
