AN AMERICAN CIVIL WAR ERA FIVE DOLLAR CONFEDERATE NOTE, LEWIS MOODY, NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA, AND JEFFERSON, TEXAS, APRIL 1, 1862, ink engraving on thin wove paper, "On Demand I will pay five dollars [to] the bearer in a Confederate Note, when presented in sums of Twenty Dollars at the Office of Lewis Moody in Jefferson, Texas.;" 3" x 7", unframed. Provenance: Estate of Theresa Brady, Galveston, Texas. Note: Col. William Lewis Moody Sr. (1828-1920) is Galveston's namesake founder and family patriarch of one of south Texas' most influential families. After fighting in the American Civil War and sustaining battle wounds; Col. William Lewis Moody Sr. moved to his family to Galveston, Texas in 1866. He was instrumental in ultimately establishing the port of Galveston as a major point of entry to Texas; his financial, banking and shipping legacy lasting in Texas well into the 21st century.
