Attributed to Rembrandt Peale (1778-1860) American. Portrait of an American Naval Officer believed to be Commodore Matthew Perry. Provenance: Veerhoff Gallery, Washington DC Matthew Perry commanded ships in the war of 1812 and the Mexican-American War. He played a leading role in opening up Japan to the West. Rembrandt Peale was an American artist and museum keeper. A prolific portrait painter, he was especially acclaimed for his likenesses of presidents George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. Peale completed more than 600 paintings; his style was influenced by French neoclassicism.Overall size: 35 5/8 x 30 3/4 in. Sight size: 29 1/8 x 29 1/8 in. #1248
