Attributed to Rembrandt Peale (1778-1860) American. Portrait of an American Naval Officer believed to be Commodore Matthew Perry. Provenance: Veerhoff Gallery, Washington DC Matthew Perry commanded ships in the war of 1812 and the Mexican-American War. He played a leading role in opening up Japan to the West. Rembrandt Peale was an American artist and museum keeper. A prolific portrait painter, he was especially acclaimed for his likenesses of presidents George Washington and Thomas Jefferson.
