Description
**First Time At Auction**

Richard Reinhardt (American, 1921-1998). Glass dog sculpture, 1994. Signed and dated on underside of the head. An endearing glass sculpture of a sweet pup by Richard Reinhardt. The puppy stands on all fours with an extended tail, gazing ahead with wide-open eyes, raised ears, a perky nose, and a lagging tongue. All is rendered in a marvelous array of hues - cherry red, lemon yellow, sky blue, watermelon pink, and black details upon a periwinkle blue coat. A gem of a sculpture by Richard Reinhardt who is also known for his jewelry and has had works collected by the Smithsonian Museum of American Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and other elite art institutions. Size: 12.75" L x 3.75" W x 3.875" H (32.4 cm x 9.5 cm x 9.8 cm)

In addition to working in glass, Richard Reinhardt was a metalsmith. According to the Smithsonian American Art Museum, "Richard Reinhardt learned metalsmithing from his father, Elmer, who was a mechanical arts teacher and tinsmith. He was encouraged to develop his artistic talent with painting lessons and was later awarded a scholarship to study painting at the Pennsylvania Museum School of the Arts. Reinhardt’s training as a jeweler began when he found himself with no money to buy jewelry for his girlfriend; he began to sneak into a class taught by Douglas Gilchrist, hoping the nearsighted professor would not notice. After the Second World War, he attended the Handy and Harman summer workshops in New York State, where he learned more of his craft from Baron Erik Fleming, silversmith to the king of Sweden."

Provenance: private Goldstein collection, Denver, Colorado, USA. The Goldstein's have amassed their collection over the past six decades.
