Central Asia, Iran, Chalcolithic Period, ca. 4000 to 2000 BCE. A wheel-thrown pottery vessel with a pair of goat or ibex animals and birds painted around the upper shoulder. The silhouetted animals on a buff surface is iconic to the Near East and often found in tombs as grave goods. Ibex were highly symbolic to the people of the Zagros mountain range, perhaps because of their large, protruding horns, the animals seem to have been considered symbolic of virility and masculinity.
