Description
Since Kamsa, the evil king of Mathura, was threatening the life of the newborn Krishna, the child was transferred to a safe place by his father, Vasudeva, soon after his birth. The painting depicts the night when Vasudeva carries Krishna across the river Yamuna. It is dark and a thunderstorm is looming with lightning meandering across the sky, but the ford is facilitated by the presence of the snake Vasuki and a tiger. Krishna is thus brought to the house of his adoptive parents, Yashoda and Nanda, arriving safely at their home, the building on the right. Once grown up, he will return to Mathura to kill Kamsa.
