Description
An important altar depicting Krishna Venugopala, or the flute (venu) player and cow herder (gopala), standing on a circular double lotus-flower base, itself resting on a two-step plinth. The deity is depicted in sumptuous robes, his chest adorned with necklaces, his right leg plastically crosses his left and his arms are raised sideways to play the musical instrument, now missing. Krishna is framed under a tree whose branches serve as an honorary parasol and is set within an elaborate openwork prabha with secondary figures (including other avatars of Lord Vishnu), lions and elephants amidst sprays and vegetal motifs. The deity is also flanked by two cows, protagonists of the epic episode and reminiscent of his origins as a herdsman in his adopted family. Exhibition: Magie dell'India. From temple to court, masterpieces of Indian art. Treviso, Casa dei Carraresi, 26 October 2013 - 31 May 2014. Not included in the catalogue. Provenance: Private collection, Milan, Italy. Lot with export license.
