Description
Late Period, ca. 664-332 BC.
A glazed composition amulet of reclining Anubis, the ancient Egyptian god of mummification and the afterlife. This amulet features a beautifully detailed jackal figure, with forepaws outstretched and erect ears, creating a sense of alertness and readiness. The jackal's fur is rendered in a glossy dark finish. The amulet also features a loop at the back, indicating that it was likely intended to be worn as a protective charm or talisman. Anubis, in his jackal form, was a key figure in ancient Egyptian religion, responsible for guiding the deceased through the journey to the afterlife. As such, amulets depicting the god were commonly placed within tombs or worn as a means of protection during this journey.
Size: L:22mm / W:15.6mm ; 1.65g
Provenance: Property of a West London gentleman; previously in a collection formed on the UK/International art market in the 1990s.
