Description
**First Time At Auction**
Roman, early Imperial Period, ca. 1st century CE. A free-blown flask formed from semi-translucent glass of rich cobalt hues. The slightly compressed base and spherical body create a stable form, and the tapered neck terminates in an everted rim. Three fragmentary strands of trailed decorations visible along one side of the shoulder allude to how gorgeous this appeared when first created. Size: 2" W x 3.3" H (5.1 cm x 8.4 cm); 4.8" H (12.2 cm) on included custom stand.
A similar example hammered for GBP 12,500 ($15,224.06) at Christie's, London "Ancient Glass from the Shlomo Moussaieff Collection" auction (sale 13850, July 6, 2016, lot 212).
Exhibited in "Ancient Glass: Selections from the Richard Brockway Collection" at the Hallie Ford Museum of Art at Willamette University, Salem from March 10 to May 19, 2007 and "Glass of the Ancient World" at the Vero Beach Museum of Art, Florida from October 11 to December 28, 2008.
Provenance: private Vero Beach, Florida, USA collection, acquired in 1970 in Athens, Greece

Condition
Minor abrasions and earthen deposits, with small calcification in compressed area beneath body, otherwise intact and excellent. Light rainbow and silvery iridescence in scattered areas.
