Description
(MILITARY--SPANISH AMERICAN WAR.) Charge of the Colored Troops--San Juan. Chromolithograph, 15¾ x 20 inches; minimal wear. Chicago: James Lee Co., 1907 The Battle of San Juan Hill took place on 1 July 1898. Though Theodore Roosevelt and his Rough Riders attracted the most attention for their exploits, the 24th Colored Infantry Regiment played an important part in the battle. The famous general John Pershing, who also fought at San Juan, later wrote "White regiments, black regiments, regulars and Rough Riders, representing the young manhood of the North and the South, fought shoulder to shoulder, unmindful of race or color . . . and mindful of only their common duty as Americans."
