Description
Set of 12 French white porcelain scalloped edged dinner plates with a wide lavender border, the inner well outlined with gold scroll design and the center with a coloured armorial bearing / coat of arms of the Casgrain family of Quebec and Ontario, manufactured by Bertin Tissier & Cie porcelain manufacturers of Rue de Rivoli 90, Paris, France, with company mark on reverse, circa 1885. - Provenance - Property of the Casgrain family of Quebec, the set was custom ordered by Joseph Phillipe Baby Casgrain and Ellen Mary Cook shortly after their marriage in 1885. Joseph Phillipe Baby Casgrain (1856 – 1939) was a Quebec surveyor, civil engineer and political figure in Quebec. He was a Liberal member of the Senate of Canada for De Lanaudière from 1900 to 1939. Ellen Mary Cook was from Williamsburg, Ontario. J.P.B. Casgrain was the son of Pierre Phillipe Baby Casgrain (1826 – 1917) a Quebec lawyer and author who served as a member of the Canadian House of Commons. Pierre Phillipe Baby Casgrain’s brother Charles-Eusèbe Casgrain was an Ontario physician, and served as a Conservative member of the Senate of Canada for Windsor from 1887 to 1907. J.P.B Casgrain’s paternal grandparents were Charles-Eusèbe Casgrain (1800 – 1848) a lawyer and political figure in Lower Canada, and his wife Elizabeth Anne Baby, from the prominent Baby family of York, Upper Canada. By descent to the current owners. Measures 9.25 inches diameter.
