Native American, Midwestern to Eastern United States, present-day Pennsylvania and West Virginia, Eastern Woodland & Archaic period, ca. 5000 BCE to 1500 CE. A fine pair of hand-carved hand axes of oblong utilitarian forms with relatively narrow edges along their heads. Each axe features a shallow groove that wraps around the entire tool - hence the name "full groove" axe head - that aided the user when gripping the tool. Hand axes like this were used for a variety of tasks such as scraping, cutting, digging, or they could be hafted onto handles for greater leverage. Size (West Virginia): 5.9" L x 3" W (15 cm x 7.6 cm); (Pennsylvania): 4.1" L x 3.4" W (10.4 cm x 8.6 cm)

Both pieces have nicks, abrasions, and surface roughness commensurate with age, otherwise intact and very good. Nice preservation to overall form. Information written in blue ink on each piece.
