Composers Puccini & Massenet Signed Postcard Pair

A pair of two autographed postcards signed by composers Giacomo Puccini and Jules Massenet, with the latter inscribed with a line of music from his opera Esclarmonde (1889). Both are addressed to the same recipient, "M. Auderson" of Lausanne, Switzerland and have been postmarked from Romainmôtier. Please see below for additional information on contents and condition. Very good overall- a wonderful pairing.

The lot includes:

1.) Giacomo Puccini autographed postcard, measuring 3.5" x 5.5", ca. 1904, Milan, Italy. Signed on front "Giacomo Puccini" below printed line of music from his opera Manon Lescaut (1893). Expected wear, including darkened handling marks and general toning throughout.

2.) Jules Massenet signed and inscribed postcard, measuring 3.5" x 5", ca. 1903, Paris, France. Signed on front "Massenet/ Paris 1903" and inscribed with a musical quotation from the prologue ("O Divine Esclarmonde…") of his opera Esclarmonde (1889). Areas of darkened soiling and minor silvering to front present, with evidence of prior mounting on verso.

Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924) was an Italian composer known primarily for his operas. While his early work was heavily inspired by the Romantic tradition of Italian opera, he later became a proponent of the Verismo (or "realism") genre popularized in the early twentieth century. Among his most notable works include Manon Lescaut (1893), La bohème (1896), and Madame Butterfly (1904).

French composer Jules Massenet (1842-1912) also holds roots in the Romantic tradition, producing over thirty operas in this style. Indeed, one of his most frequently staged works, Werther (1892), is loosely based on Goethe's classic Romantic novel The Sorrows of Young Werther for which it is named. Today, he is widely classified as a notable composer of the Belle Époque.
