Russian Pianist & Composer Sergei Rachmaninoff Signed Sheet
1p of a bifolium, measuring 5" x 6.5", postmarked New York, dated March 21, 1930. A blank folded sheet signed "S. Rachmaninoff." With the original transmittal envelope. The signed page has flattened mail folds. Expected wear and soiling to the envelope. Boldly signed.
Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943) was one of the world's most famous pianists of the late Romantic period and would also emerge as one of its most accomplished composers and conductors. After graduating from the Moscow Conservatory in 1892, Rachmaninoff, at first, struggled to find his musical voice. In 1901, he enjoyed his first professional success with his Glinka Award-winning Piano Concerto No. 2. Rachmaninoff left his conductorship at the Bolshoi Theater following the Russian Revolution, and emigrated to the United States. While touring the U.S., his compositional output slowed significantly, but by 1930, his desire to compose had returned, and he purchased a plot of land near Hertenstein, Switzerland, which he named "Villa Senar" in which to write new pieces and revise old works.
