Description

John Lennon Wood From Pump Organ, Ex. Sotheby's w/ Incredible Provenance!

A piece of wood taken from John Lennon's personally owned late 19th century Mason & Hamlin pump organ. The instrument in question was previously auctioned at Sotheby's on June 23, 1984 as part of the Collection of John Lennon & Yoko Ono. The wood fragment measures approximately .5" x 1" and is encapsulated by CAG to the overall size of 2.25" x 3.25". The piece is accompanied by a packet of provenance which includes a copy of the original Certificate of Ownership signed by Ono.

Throughout his life, John Lennon would become an avid collector of musical instruments. Other examples that were auctioned as part of their collection included a 1916 Brambach, Baldwin studio, and Yamaha electric pianos. Regarding the collection, Yoko was quoted as saying, ''These objects being offered at Sotheby's are things John and I loved dearly in different periods of our lives, and are the only large collection of objects that will be released to the public other than that which would be kept by the family and that which would one day be in Lennon Museum for the public to share.'' The proceeds of the sale were notably donated to the Spirit Foundation in New York, which the couple founded in 1978.
