Description

John Lennon, The Last Sessions, 7 Photographs

Famed English artist, Beatle John Lennon (1940-1980) collection of seven photographs signed by the photographer David Spindel as “David M. Spindel” at lower right of each photograph in either black or silver felt tip. Six glossy black and white prints and one duotone print, 8” x 10”, circa November 1980, New York. Unpublished. Versos of photographs are blank, with three showing stamps, ink or mounting residue, not affecting the rectos. Minor surface wear, else in fine condition.

The collection includes four images of Lennon playing guitar, two showing Lennon at the mixing board (one with Yoko Ono seated next to Lennon), and one green duotone portrait of Lennon superimposed over an image of The Dakota.

In November of 1980, David Spindel was awarded a location assignment that would forever change the face of his career. He was asked to photographically document a recording session that was to take place at New York City’s well-known The Hit Factory. Spindel arrived completely unaware that he would be photographing John Lennon and Yoko Ono.

Tragically, less than three weeks later John Lennon was murdered in front of his Central Park West home, barely a mile from where Lennon and Spindel, if only for a day, worked together. That fateful recording session was to be the last time John Lennon was to appear before a professional lens. At present, most of the photographs taken that day remain unpublished.

David Michael Spindel (b. 1941) is an American photographer. He began his professional career in 1964, working with still-life objects, and eventually broadened his horizons by doing portraits. Spindel achieved worldwide recognition for his baseball memorabilia photography, though he is best known for photographing John Lennon and Yoko Ono during Lennon's last recording sessions for Double Fantasy in 1980. Spindel's photographs have been published in numerous books, and licensed for CDs, videos, documentary films, and posters.
