oil on canvas, 1933, signed and dated at lower left, inscribed in pencil to top stretcher "VG #30642 / 22 x 28," presented in a period gilt frame.
Stretcher size 22 x 28 in.; Frame dimensions 25 3/4 x 31 1/2 in.
Anton Otto Fischer was born in Germany and immigrated to the United States in 1897. After a little over a decade on the sea and racing yachts, he ultimately deciding to pursue a career as an artist. He studied with Arthur Burdett Frost and Howard Pyle, as well as studying for two years in Paris at the Académie Julian.
Fischer is best known for his maritime paintings and illustrations. His work was published frequently in Harper's Weekly and The Saturday Evening Post, including fifteen cover illustrations. He was a favorite illustrator of Jack London and Guy Gilpatric.
In 1942, Fischer was honored Artist Laureate of the United States Coast Guard. His paintings have been exhibited and are in the collections of numerous museums, including the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, D.C. and the Mystic Seaport Museum in Connecticut.
