BIOGRAPHY:
Jules Guerin received his early schooling in St. Louis. When old enough to begin to pursue a career he decided to become a civil engineer and entered Washington University. He left the school late in 1880 to go to Chicago after deciding his interests lay in art. His first job in Chicago was as a painter of theater scenery. He then entered the School of the Art Institute of Chicago while continuing his scenery painting job for the next ten years. In 1887 he received a commission to do book illustrations and took the opportunity to travel abroad where he studied under Jean Paul Laurens at the Academie Julian. Returning to Chicago that same year he began painting scenery at the Auditorium theater. In 1894 he left again for Europe this time to study under Benjamin Constant at the Julian as well as Laurens. He remained through the Spring of 1895, having exhibited two paintings at the Champ de Mars Salon and then traveled during the summer in Holland. Guerin returned to Chicago in November 1895 and subsequently in the Spring of 1896. He won the prestigious Charles Tyson Yerkes First Figure painting prize and the W. L. Mead Watercolor prize at the annual exhibition of the Chicago Society of Artists.Guerin later moved to New York and continued a successful career in book illustration begun in Chicago. Among the titles of the books he illustrated are: Notes on Travel, 1900; The Mystery of Orcival, 1901; The Gaboriau Volumes, 1905; Chateaux (The) of Touraine, 1906; Egypt and It's Monuments, 1908; The Holy Land, 1910; The Lure Of The Garden, 1911; The Syrian Shepherd's Psalm, 1911; The Fruitful Vine, 1911; and The Near East: Dalmatia, Greece, and Constantinople, 1913.He died in Neptune, New Jersey, on June 13, 1946.
