Description
19TH C. PORTRAIT OF AMERICAN SCHOONER
Oil on canvas, portrait of a three-masted American schooner in full sail, (ship flag "Tirrel"?), with two ships in the distant background, one on right is a steam and sail, some old repairs showing on back and old canvas craquelure, gilded wood frame, recently found in a Nantucket estate, 22 1/2" x 30 1/2" (sight). [Note: Back of canvas stamped by "G. Rowney & Co, London" canvas maker (1815-1858), and by "J.J. Adams, 99 Washington St. Boston" merchant. A Gilbert Stuart 1814 painting also bears this stamp as well, as he also used this Boston artist supplier. In the early 1800's there was a Capt. Joseph Tirrell of Weymouth, Mass. and Jacob (1767-1841).]
