Description
Fauvist oil on panel painting signed "J. W. Gregory" and dated 1928. Presumably John Worthington Gregory, American, 1903-1992.
The house shown is very similar to that in a 1934 lithograph by the same artist titled "Oldest House in Provincetown," 72 Commercial Street.
Gregory attended the Art Students League in New York City where he studied under teachers like John Sloane, a prominent figure in the Ashkan movement... Evidence in that sensibility is clearly visible in this painting and the lithographs that began his career. Photography was adopted slightly later in or around 1944. Incidentally, Gregory and his wife owned the house at 72 Commercial St. in Provincetown - originally built in 1746.
