Description
Meiji Period
The larger opening to a wood carved figure dressed in formal gilt detailed, long, layered robes, the bearded face gazing downward with a furrowed brow beneath squared cap, a dragon's head resting on the cap and the body trailing down the back of the figure, the dragon with red and gilt detailing, the figure holding an offering of fruit and standing on blue pigment painted crashing waves set on a multi faceted gilt plinth, signed on the lower back robe, the case red and gold lacquered with elaborate gilt bronze fittings, the figure signed on the reverse reading Komatsu gawa machi inose (possibly the nick name of the artist); the smaller opening to wood carved and gilt detailed bodhisattva dressed in long robes holding a vajra in the right hand, the left hand held in a fist, the downcast face below hair gathered behind a scrolling crown centered by a Buddhist wheel of law, a flaming mandorla behind the head, the case lacquered in a deep red with a gilt interior and mounted with elaborate bronze mounts.

Condition
Larger- case with crack to front top edge, scattered small lacquer chips and wear from age, the interior with light surface scratches, the gold bronze tarnished with age, the figure with light gilt wear and light wear to the blue pigment, area of gilt loss on right side of plinth. Smaller- case with scattered surface scratches and small scattered lacquer surface chips, possible replacement to a few of the nails holding the doors, bodhisattva with loss to the left front edge of the crown, light gilt wear
