A Japanese Lacquered Wood Zushi Shrine
Edo period (1615-1868), a traveling shrine with black lacquered exterior case with metal hardware that previously had gilt highlights, gilt interior to doors of shrine, finely carved figure of Kannon, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, standing under a carved gilt mandorla that curves slightly over the statue, Kannon stands on a lotus pedal stand that rests on two further shaped bases, with inscription to underside of shrine.

Some wear and loss appropriate for age; break with loss to mandorla at top right; some losses to lacquer and wood of base of the box; exterior hardware has lost most of its' gilt covering.
