The Republican Court (Lady Washington’s Reception Day) Color Engraving by Huntington. Includes a framed whos who. Measures 29"x42.5"x1". and 15.5"x21"x2". Weight combined 19 pds. The original painting was done in 1861 during the American Civil War by Daniel Huntington (1816-1906) and is now in the collection of the Brooklyn Museum. When the country was being torn apart by the Civil War, this image was meant to be a tool to unite the country and pay homage to the states’ common origin. The romantic, idealized scene depicts an evening reception with dignitaries to honor Martha Washington set in May of 1789 in Philadelphia, about a month after George Washington’s Presidential Inauguration. The very grand surroundings are reminiscent of an elaborate European house. Mrs. Washington was referred to as Lady Washington PROVENANCE: The Estate of Dr. Fraser Wilson, Charleston SC. Dr. Wilson will be remembered for his love of antiques and his dedication to Charleston's history and material culture. He was a Life Trustee of Historic Charleston Foundation and opened his home for house tours for 39 years. Dr. Wilson was appointed to the South Carolina Governor's Mansion Commission by Governors James B. Edwards, Richard W. Riley, Carol Campbell, David M. Beasley, James Hodges, and Mark Sanford. He was awarded the Order of the Palmetto by the Governors for his exemplary service on the Commission He was a member of the Charleston Club, the South Carolina Society, the St. Andrew's Society, the St. Cecilia Society, the Agricultural Society and the Carolina Yacht Club. He was a member of St. Michael's church.
