Description
Wartime letter signed by Union General Benjamin F. Butler (1818-1893), approving the removal of telegraph lines near New Orleans. Dated July 23rd, 1862 from New Orelans, the letter is written by a Lt. J. Elliott Smith to General Butler and reads in part:

“General, I find there is a telegraph line…in this city to Chalmet…which was put up by the Confederate government last year. As it is of no use to our interests…I take the liberty to suggest…taking down the poles…”

On the reverse of the letter, General Butler simply commands “let it be done,” and signs his name with rank.
