Description
First time at auction…
Near East, Islamic culture, ca. 12th to 13th century CE. A marvelous and massive pottery jar boasting a unique form with a pair of arched handles projecting from the bulbous shoulder and applied and incised decoration adorning the body. Sitting upon a narrow foot, the vessel's sturdy walls rise to a rotund body embellished by an applied horizontal strip of piecrust motif. A cylindrical neck rises from the top of the vessel, culminating in a rolled rim. Several registers of straight and undulating parallel striations encompass the shoulder and neck. Vessels like this would be used for storage and trade of liquids such as wine. Size: 15.3" Diameter x 18" H (38.9 cm x 45.7 cm)
