Description

Originally offered at $350...

Central and South America, Spanish Colonial Period, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A hand-carved wooden stirrup that exhibits a pyramidal form with the back half opening into hollow cavity for the rider's foot to rest in. The surface is carved in relief with foliate motifs of spiraling tendrils and the honey-colored wood has developed a lovely smooth patina over the ages. Hefty wooden stirrups were often preferred over simpler styles, because they cover the whole foot and protect the rider in rugged terrain. Size: 4.5" L x 4.5" W x 7.5" H (11.4 cm x 11.4 cm x 19 cm)

Provenance: private Denver, Colorado, USA collection, acquired in the 1960s
