Description
Central America, ca. 18th century CE. An exceptionally large and impressive, hand carved wooden Latin cross with remains of green, gold, red, and white, pigment adorning the form. The cross was carved from two pieces, one forming the central vertical component or stipes; the other forming the horizontal crossbar or patibulum. This form was mounted upon a concave cylindrical base which was in turn mounted upon a grander base carved to resemble an upside down Corinthian capital, elegantly painted with gold, red, and white hues. The patibulum and stipes were carved extensively and are comprised of multiple mazorcas or cob-like forms; these are separated by bands of foliate forms framed by striations. The terminals of the cross are all carved to resemble the acanthus leaves of a classical Corinthian capital. This is a stupendous work of religious art, impressive for its fine carving and rich blend of folk art and classical elements. Size: 43-1/4" x 20-3/8"
